Marine equipment

The SLX Group supply the marine industry with purification solutions ranging from Ballast water treatment systems and Bilge Water Separators for oily water. We also supply a range of advanced equipment such as Becker Marine rudders, Simplex fin stabilizers and high performance rotary steering vane gear.

Turbulo bilgewater separators

The Turbulo-MPB Bilge Water Separator is the latest development of the Turbulo separator which dates back to 1925. With this experience, combined with continuous development, the Turbulo-MPB Bilge Water Separator provides a highly reliable, trouble free way to comply with the latest MEPC regulations.

The Turbulo MPB Bilge Water Separator is a two-stage oily water separator, suitable for use onboard any ship or offshore platform. It fulfils the 5 ppm criteria, as well as, the IMO 15 ppm requirements.

The sizes range from 0.25 m3/h to 10 m3/h.

As an option, we recommend fitting the Turbulo Sludge Buoy in the holding tank. With this simple mechanical device, it is possible to remove the oil which has separated out in the holding tank before it even enters the separator, thereby reducing maintenance and cleaning of the separator unit very considerably.

The first stage of the separator unit is a pressure system, with oleophilic coalescer inserts, that operates on a gravitational principle. Oily water is passed through the separator via a helical rotor pump and the separated oil is drained by means of automatic level control. There is a heating coil to address heavy fuel oil scenarios. The second stage features HycaSep (hydrocarbon separator) elements which coalesce the finest oil particles. An IMO certified monitor is included.

The unit operates fully automatically with continuous monitoring. The pump has run-dry protection. Maintenance is easy. There is no need to dismantle any pipes or fittings. The units are supported by a world-wide network of service stations.

Simplex fin stabilisers

Simplex fin stabilisers have been proven in many installations over many decades. They are robust and highly reliable. They have been subject to continuous development and represent the leading edge of this technology.

All retractable fin stabilisers have anti-vortex tips. The Ultra High Lift Fin is a special tail flap which increases roll reduction efficiency by up to 15% compared with conventional two-part fin stabilisers.

Depending on your requirements, you can select:

  • Standard retractable fin stabilisers
  • Zero speed retractable fin stabilisers
  • Special stabiliser covers to reduce drag in way of the fin box
  • Fixed fin stabilisers
  • Special Eco mode control software
  • Retrofits of updated control systems for existing stabilisers
  • Rudder based roll stabilisation – see our information on steering gear

Simplex rotary vane steering gear

The Simplex rotary vane steering gear is a high-performance steering gear with very fast response times and angles up to 65 degrees or more on twin rudder systems with asymmetrical rudder angles.

Being relatively small in size, it is ideal for smaller vessels where space is an issue or where high performance is required. The steering gear can be used with any type of rudder.

Because of its very high speed of reaction, the steering gear is available for use on its own as a roll reduction system. By eliminating the need for fin stabilisers, this steering gear is particularly suitable for applications where the acoustic signal should be reduced.

Becker Mewis Duct® and ESD

The Becker Mewis Duct® has proven its energy saving capabilities, on many installations, over more than the ten years. The Duct is positioned ahead of the propeller so that it can straighten and accelerate the flow of water onto the propeller, thereby producing a net forward thrust. At the same time the fins provide a pre-swirl, which reduces losses in the propeller slipstream. The resultant increase in thrust, at a given propulsive power, makes savings of between 38% attainable depending on the individual hull / propeller interaction. Additional advantages include reduced cavitation and vibration.

The Becker Mewis Duct® is equally suited to new builds and retrofits. Savings are greatest for bulkers and tankers, but multipurpose vessels can typically expect to save between 3–5%. Becker have also developed a special version of the Mewis Duct® for container vessels and other fast vessels, with operating speeds in excess of 18 knots. This version of the Mewis Duct® has a smaller nozzle with much lower drag and with fins which extend outwards beyond the nozzle. Savings of 3-4% can be expected.

All Mewis Ducts® are designed to suit the hull shape of the individual vessel and are tank tested to prove the design before manufacture commences.

Becker intelligent monitoring system

Becker Intelligent Monitoring System (BIMS) measures the rudder forces and interfaces with the vessel’s navigation systems, as well as visualising the rudder lift on the bridge. This improves manoeuvrability but also prevents oversteering when the auto-pilot is in operation. The reduced rudder movements during auto-pilot operation (and also dynamic positioning) result in energy savings of 1–1.5% depending on the type of operation, as well as less wear and tear on the steering components.

Becker RUDI underwater imaging

We are able to offer, through our principals Becker Marine Systems, a means of surveying a propulsion system, using RUDI, a real time digital camera device which can monitor and record underwater events in real time. This is a very good way to solve problems of vibration or cavitation; and also enables dry dockings to be much more accurately planned in terms of manpower requirement and time required.

Becker rudders

The name Becker is synonymous with high-performance rudders. Their range includes:

  • Flap rudders
  • Schilling rudders
  • Twisted leading edge rudders
  • Twisted trailing edge rudders
  • Rudder bulbs
  • Steering nozzles

Becker will optimise your manoeuvring system according to the specific design and operational requirements of your vessel.
